Appraisal O F Different Methods of Estimating Equivalence Scales and Their Results

چکیده
Equivalence scales are intended to measure the relative incomes which are needed to enable families of different size, or in different circumstances, to enjoy the same standard of living. They are useful in various contexts: for assessing and comparing changes in real income, the distribution of income, the impact of taxes and of social security benefits, and so on. The estimation of equivalence scales involves many difficulties, both conceptual and practical, and various methods have been tried. Although, in theory, equivalence scales can be derived by laying down objective standards of what different households "need" and then determining the cost of achieving these standards (e.g., Rowntree [I], Booth [2]), they have usually been derived by empirical analysis of expenditure patterns, using data from surveys of household budgets (e.g., U.K. Family Expenditure Surveys [3,4]). Despite the well-known problems concerning the accuracy of the survey data, they do reflect the actual behaviour of consumers and avoid the use of arbitrary standards. Studies of consumer behaviour do not, of course, take account of the non-material "satisfactions" which a married couple, for instance, may derive from having children (cf. Edward F. Denison [5]).

RUHR ECONOMIC PAPERS A Nonparametric Partially Identifi ed Estimator for Equivalence Scales # 526
Methods for estimating equivalence scales usually rely on rather strong identifying assumptions. This paper considers a partially identifi ed estimator for equivalence scales derived from the potential outcomes framework and using nonparametric methods for estimation, which requires only mild assumptions. Instead of point estimates, the method yields only lower and upper bounds of equivalence s...
متن کاملSome Observations on Dirac Measure-Preserving Transformations and their Results
Dirac measure is an important measure in many related branches to mathematics. The current paper characterizes measure-preserving transformations between two Dirac measure spaces or a Dirac measure space and a probability measure space. Also, it studies isomorphic Dirac measure spaces, equivalence Dirac measure algebras, and conjugate of Dirac measure spaces. The equivalence classes of a Dirac ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Substantial Equivalence of salinity-resistant transgenic potato
Transgenic plants and their products are being developed day by day due to their improved characteristics, and it is necessary to evaluate the safety of these plants before releasing them. Hence, the importance of the issue of biosafety of transgenic plants and the use of their products has led the regulatory agencies to create some laws called substantial equivalence. based on that, the essent...
متن کاملMethods of Estimating Household Equivalence Scales: an Empirical Investigation
This paper presents empirical evidence regarding key assumptions of the Rothbarth and Barten methods of constructing household equivalence scales. The assumption of separability in the Rothbarth model is investigated by examining the implied intra-household allocation of specific goods and by examining studies of economies of scale in household consumption. The assumption of the exogeneity of t...
